What makes someone heroic? In the words of Gerald Way," Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary." I had a teacher in first grade who was just an ordinary person. She didn't wear a cape as a super hero. She didn't win gold medals as a great Olympian and nor did she change the way the world works. But to me, she was a hero. She made me feel safe in a new school. She encouraged me when I was afraid to try something new. She was the reason that I became a teacher. She made many of us ordinary people want to become extraordinary.

My hope is that in fifth grade you will find whatever it is that you can do to be extraordinary.
