Upcoming Staff and Parent Focus Groups to Discuss Shared Norms
PSSA Testing Reduction to Benefit Students, Teachers, and Parents
It is hard to believe that we have completed the first marking period of the 2017-18 school year. I hope you and your child/children are experiencing a positive school year. We hit the ground running in August and continue to be very busy here at the Middle School. Our big initiative was the roll-out of our new student information system, Infinite Campus. The adoption of this new system has come with some learning curves, and we certainly appreciate your patience as we work out the kinks of our new system. If you have not done so already, I strongly encourage you to create a parent portal login. A parent portal login will give you access to all your child's academic information. Please visit the district's webpage for more information on creating your parent portal login. Communication between parents and school is crucial to student success.
A second large initiative that we embarked on this year is our 1:1 laptop computer initiative. We are very excited about this new program. Our 1:1 initiative supports one of the district's value statements that we will be a leader in innovation and technology. I am very impressed with what I have already seen accomplished by students and teachers with their computers. We are taking baby steps with our new technology, and we understand that computers are only a tool to enhance learning. We believe that the magic in the classroom comes from the classroom teacher making personal connections and building relationships with students daily.
To enhance our personal connections and our ability to build relationships we have a new and improved PBIS program. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Our PBIS framework is called A.R.R.O.W.S. This framework gives us the opportunity to teach positive behavior and to reward students for meeting our building-wide expectations.
We improved A.R.R.O.W.S. by replacing the Dojo system with the Hanna Cash system. Students receive Hanna Cash from teachers which can be used to enter drawings or to purchase fun coupons during lunch. Kids enjoy having their principal serve them lunch when they purchase a serve-you-lunch coupon. A second improvement to our A.R.R.O.W.S. is our Principal's 200 Club. Ten students per day win a P200 Club certificate. Those students sign our celebrity book, receive an immediate positive phone call home, and are entered to win our mystery prize. Our P200 Club has generated a lot of excitement in the building.
I hope, as parents and guardians, that you are also excited about what is going on at STMS. We believe that every student in our school has a right to a world class education. We are working very hard to create a learning environment that supports our district's Mission Statement "The Success of Every Learner." Working together, we will achieve our goal, and our students will experience success.
