POLICY

 STUDENT USE OF CALCULATORS

Student use of calculators in district classrooms will be permitted at all grade levels I conjunction with the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. At each grade level, students will be permitted to use calculators for classroom computations, homework assignments and examinations when deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher operating within the framework of the written curriculum.

Regardless of the course, each teacher is free to establish procedures for calculator use and is responsible for relating the procedures to all students being instructed. Teachers should base their classroom procedures on sound educational philosophy as related to the course content and the proficiency level of the students.

It is important that each teacher acts in a fair manner, keeping in mind that all students should have access to materials needed in a given course of instruction. Permission to use calculators should not favor or penalize a student’s opportunity to perform because of a limited availability of calculators.

This procedural statement does not imply that calculators are the only means for students to perform calculations. Pencil and paper skills, estimation and mental mathematics are extremely important to the student’s mathematical development and must be used along with calculators to provide students with the opportunity to succeed in mathematics.
