Letter From
The STMS Principal

                            January 23, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Since our last newsletter was published, we have been very busy here at STMS.  Students have participated in our school-wide Spelling Bee and the school-wide National Geographic Bee.  We have been treated to an orchestra concert and a high school choral concert.    We collected 1,069 pounds of non-perishable food items for the Food Bank (thank you to all who donated), and had fun at our Faculty vs. Student Basketball Games.  Students have been staying after school for musical rehearsals, AAP, basketball practice and games, yearbook committee, and art club.  Students have been collecting A.R.R.O.W.S cards and earing positive Dojo points for meeting A.R.R.O.W.S expectations.  Yes, it is safe to say that we have been very busy here at STMS, and both students and teachers have been working hard.

Recently, all students completed their second round of CDT testing (Classroom Diagnostic Tools) in both math and reading.  The CDT is an on-line assessment that gives classroom teachers immediate feedback on students’ progress.   Data discussions follow CDT testing which enable students to analyze their CDT data and construct personal goal statements for the next round of CDTs.  School-wide CDT data is used to drive future instruction in preparation for the upcoming PSSA tests.  Using our CDT data, we will be implementing STMS SUCCESS during the second semester.  STMS SUCCESS is a literacy and math intervention initiative that will take place during our Academic Enrichment periods.  STMS SUCCESS will meet students at their instructional levels and will work to improve literacy and math skills in all students.

In addition to academic intervention, we continue to work hard to improve our school community by utilizing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  Following our A.R.R.O.W.S. expectations we strive daily to model and demonstrate positive character traits creating a school culture that is conducive to student success.  Our goal is to become the best middle school in the state of Pennsylvania.  We can only achieve our goal with your help.  Our data indicates that eighty-three 6th grade students have received 240 office referrals to date.  Eighty-eight of our 7th grade students have received 496 office referrals to date.  One hundred and eighty of our 8th grade students have received 439 referrals to date.  We are working to create a learning environment that is safe and conducive to learning for all students and we need your help.  Please review and discuss our A.R.R.O.W.S. expectations with your child, stressing the importance of being Accountable, Respectful, Ready to Learn, Organized, Well-Behaved, and Safe.

Your continued support will only help us to achieve our goal.   Working together, I am confident that we can create a learning environment where every student can grow and every child can experience success.  I am confident we can become a Pennsylvania School to Watch® by 2018.  Thank you.
