Class of 2016 Graduates with Distinction
Victories in athletics and scholarship were part and parcel at the 104th Commencement Exercises for the Susquehanna Twp. High School Class of 2016 on June 9, at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center.
Fresh from a 10-0 state finals win earlier that afternoon, senior team members traded baseball caps for graduation mortar boards and joined more than 200 classmates for the commencement ceremony. And in an up-to-the-minute grading tally, Joya Maser became the class salutatorian and joined Joseph Nguyen in the honor to be seated on stage and deliver reflections along with valedictorian and baseball player Wade Hisiro.
A surprise announcement by Dr. Miram Gomez Witmer, keynote speaker and STHS Class of 1979, named Noah Cooper as the recipient of the first Ken and Bonnie Bentz Educational Scholarship Award. Cooper, who received $500 and mentorship from Dr. Witmer, will attend Millersville University to study early childhood education.
Dwayne DeFoor, STHS Alumni Associaton president and HANNA Education Foundation vice-president, was honored with the annual Alumni Achievement Award.
More than 3,500 guests attended the graduation ceremony in the Large Arena at the Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. The band and senior chorus performed under the direction of Mr. Eric Hartranft and Mrs. Amy Burghdorf, respectively. The Dauphin County Honor Guard presented the colors. Mr. Keith Still, high school principal, and Elliot Solomon, class president, officiated at the ceremony.
Speakers included Mr. John Dietrich, president of the school board of directors, Dr. Tod Kline, superintendent of schools, as well as students, Dr. Witmer, and Dwayne DeFoor.
