Summer PSAT/SAT Prep Courses

 

PSAT/SAT– MATH STRATEGIES

July 15 – 16 – 17

Susquehanna Township Municipal Building 

Instructor: Anne Rogalski

An absolute must for college-bound students, this courseintroduces the format of the SAT and PSAT math tests.  Emphasis will be placed on the core mathconcepts central to the test, as well as strategies for attacking the mostdifficult SAT math questions. 

(Students should bring a calculator to class.)

SAT – ADVANCED MATH STRATEGIES – ADD-ONWORKSHOP

July 18 – 19

Students taking the PSAT/SAT Math Strategies class maychoose to add this two-day workshop for a more advanced approach to SATmath prep.  Emphasis will be placed onthe most sophisticated math topics included on the SAT test.  The major focus will be score improvement. 

(Students should bring a calculator to class.)

PSAT/SAT – VERBAL STRATEGIES

July 22

This course focuses on test-readiness, familiarity with thetest questions, and strategies for improving scores. Each section of the verbalcomponent is reviewed and analyzed so that the student will feel more confidentwhen taking the SAT.

(Students who have alreadypaid the $15 book fee from the Math Strategies course should not orderanother book.)

We are pleasedto announce that applications for our Schoolof the Arts are now being accepted!

TheSchool of the Arts provides a rigorous academic experiencecoupled with a conservatory approach to instruction in the Arts. Students inthe School of the Arts will spend the majority of their day engaged indeveloping their artistic talents. They will showcase their abilities throughthe use of Common Core speaking, listening, reading and writing standards. APcourses and college course credit will be available for enrolled students.Instruction from industry professionals as well as portfolio and performanceevaluation will also be offered in each area.

The School ofthe Arts consists of three strands:

-Fashion Design

-Theatre and Performing Arts

- VisualArts
Students may complete the application online at our high school website to beconsidered as a candidate for admission. The deadline for receipt ofapplications is Thursday, May 30th, 2013.

 

We are pleasedto announce that applications for our brand new School of Medicine, HealthSciences and Engineering are now being accepted!

Studentsin the School of Medicine,Health Sciences and Engineering will spend the majority of their day engaged inthe study of Science. A rigorous academic program focusing on project basedstudy will be targeted toward students who wish to enter Science, Technology orEngineering careers. AP courses and college course credit will be available forenrolled students. Instruction from industry professionals, engineers,physicians and scientists will also be offered. More detailed information onthese programs may be found in the STHS Educational Planning Guide.

The School of Medicine, Health Sciences andEngineering consists of two programs:

-Medical/Health Sciences

-Engineering

Interestedstudents may complete an application for their area of their interest online atour high school website. The deadline for receipt of applications is Thursday,May 30, 2013.

 

The Central PennsylvaniaChapter of Independent Electrical Contractors is inviting qualifiedindividuals to submit an application for the Electricians ApprenticeshipTraining Program. All applicants must apply in person.  May 28 – June 10, 2013;

8 am – 4:30 pm Monday –Thursday and 8 am – 4 pm on Fridays.

(Applications cannot be acceptedbefore or after these dates).  Applicationswill be accepted in person ONLY at the following locations during thetimes listed above.  More informationwill be available in Guidance or outside of room 230.

 

Students – please note that you arenot permitted to have food or drink in the classroom.  Thank you for yourcooperation.

 

GUIDANCE

Attention all students: For the remainder of theschool year the Counseling Center will be closed on Wednesdays from 2:20 until3:00 PM.

 

On May 30th during all lunches, Mrs. Gillis and Mrs. Kazakavich will be available to talkto all juniors who are interested in participating in Work Study for nextschool year.

 

Juniors interestedin applying for early graduation next school year can pick up applications inguidance.  Applications are due back to Mrs. Gillis in guidance by Monday,June 3rd.  Students will be notified by Mrs. Gillis when a determinationis made by guidance and principals whether applicants qualify for earlygraduation, which will be January 2014.

 

Attention College-BoundSeniors: Final Transcript Release Forms are now available in the Guidance Office.  It isimperative that you have your final transcript sent to the college you will beattending in the fall; ALL colleges must have your final transcript as proofthat you graduated from high school. 

 

M&T Bank isoffering scholarships to incoming freshmen at the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education universities.The award amount is $1,000 and the deadline is May 31st. Please go the school website and go to the scholarship information to getall the details!!

 

Attention all AP students: This July, your APscores will only be available online.  You will not get scores inthe mail.  To get your AP scores, you must sign up for a free CollegeBoard account at apscore.org.

 

Metzger Wickersham Personal Injury Lawyers are sponsoring a contest forseniors to create a project that safely illustrates the dangers ofdrunk and/or distracted driving. The

HACC is offering two exciting week-long summer camps forcurrent sophomores and juniors interested in learning about architecture androbotics. Interested students can pick up a registration form in Guidance, orcall the HACC-Harrisburg campus at (717) 780-2414 for more information.

 

Attention All Students: This isa friendly reminder that you must have a pass from your classroomteacher to come to the Guidance Office; even if you will only be there for afew minutes.  The Guidance staff will not be able to write you a pass backto class unless you had one from your teacher.  Thank you in advance foryour cooperation.

Messiah College is currently accepting applications for its’ secondannual Young Writers Workshop from July 14-18. The Young WritersWorkshop develops a community of young writers devoted to becoming betterwriters, thinkers, and creators. The workshop helps students improve theirskills and develop their gifts in either college-prep essay writing or increative writing. During the week, students will study J.R.R. Tolkien’s TheHobbit, and focus on writing college-level essays. Discounts are available forMessiah College faculty and staff, and scholarships are available forapplicants demonstrating financial need. Attention Seniors: PHEAA has recently posted two 45-minute webinars onhow to apply for financial aid and complete the FAFSA. Students andfamilies needing additional assistance in these areas are encouraged to visit www.pheaa.org and complete the following steps:

 

1) click on Schools under Partner Access

2) click on Training Events

3) click on Check Them Out under PHEAA Webinar TrainingCalendar

4) click on View Event Recordings (in the upper right cornerof screen)

5) click on the webinar that you want to view

6) click on PLAYBACK and it will open and start immediately

 

Attention Seniors Completing the FAFSA: There is currently aproduction issue within FAFSA that will cause some applicants to not be able tosuccessfully post their data to the Pennsylvania State Grant Form (SGF). Userswill receive an invalid navigation message if the back, forward, or refresh buttonon the web browser is used. Applicants who are unsuccessful in connecting tothe SGF via the FAFSA on the Web process will receive an email invitation fromPHEAA inviting them to complete the SGF. If experiencing difficulty, thestudent should wait at least three to four business days before trying toaccess the SGF without an invitation from PHEAA to be sure their FAFSA data hasbeen added to PHEAA's system. Please contact the State Grant and SpecialPrograms staff at1-800-443-0646 or sghelp@pheaa.orgwith any questions or concerns.

 

The 76th Edition of the School Guide is nowavailable in the Guidance Office for any interested Juniors.  The SchoolGuide is a comprehensive guide to 4-year and 2-year colleges, Nursing Schoolsand Military Programs in the United States and also includes some very usefulinformation regarding financial aid; an updated version is printed everyyear.  The School Guides are free but we only receive 100 copies, theywill be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
